Circles® South Carolina is a two generational approach to provide a hand up, not a hand out for families that want to obtain financial stability. The United Methodist Churches in South Carolina, in partnership with Circles® USA, provides the opportunity for churches to be in a relationship driven mission with the poor instead of a resource only mission.
An adaptation of the Circles® model will be additional educational support for children involved in this relationship driven model. Join us as we work to reduce the number of children living in poverty in our state.
The South Carolina United Methodist Conference Mission of the Children in Poverty Initiative:
Equip congregations to share in God’s mission by providing hope, compassion, justice, and radical hospitality to children who live in poverty.
- To urge Methodist congregations to reach out and minister with those in their community who are oppressed by poverty and by prevailing attitudes about the poor.
- To provide resources which will help these congregations in their ministry efforts.
- To encourage partnerships among congregations and community agencies that deal with the poor.
- To advocate for changes in the systems that perpetuates poverty.
Today more than ever, education remains the key to moving out of poverty, while poverty remains the biggest obstacle to education.
A two generational approach is needed to secure a child’s educational success and provide the relational support system needed for a family to lift themselves out of poverty
